About
I am an interdisciplinary scholar at Hofstra University who uses media theory, sociology, and complex systems theory to study the ways in which individuals, communities, and institutions are changing. This is a second (or third) career after 25 years of leading global emerging technology projects for Citibank and Avis Rent A Car and running a dot.com that provided intelligent agents on the Internet.
In addition to teaching Media Studies in the School of Communication, I conduct research for The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and the Urban Communication Foundation. Research interests include:
- New media and its affects on society
- Community revitalization and sustainable communities
- Social change in individuals, communities, and institutions
- The effects of emerging technologies
- Sustainable high performance in organizations
I also provide consulting services to government agencies such as the Departments of Homeland Security and the Treasury, businesses such as Hewlett Packard, and non-profits such as The Historic Districts Council and Dancing in the Streets.
My study of social evolution won the Harold A. Innis Award for Outstanding PhD Dissertation in the field of Media Ecology.
